Lottery Win Doesn't Make You Happy?
Lottery Win Doesn't Make You Happy?
Can a Lottery Win Buy Happiness? - as part of the news series by GeoBeats. What would you do if you won a lottery? That was a common question in stores, bars, and homes across America during the $650 million lottery frenzy. A lottery has a universal appeal because it seems to be the easiest way to achieve our dreams - winning promises unlimited freedom and happiness ever after. But many research studies and interviews with past lottery winners presents a decidedly mixed picture. Certainly, there are many benefits - you can help family with loans, buy homes, cars, go on vacations but a research study done by Emory University suggests that people get less satisfaction out of the rewards they haven't worked for. Then there are the additional issues that lottery winners face like lawsuit threats, relatives asking for money and predators. In a CNN report, a state lottery winner, who did not want to be identified remarked "Sometimes I wish I could change my name and go somewhere and hide," A fascinating 1978 study by Northwestern and University of Massachusetts, as reported by The New Republic, reveals that winners just get used to more money after a while and what's particularly interesting is that they enjoy routine activities like watching tv and talking to people less than the non-winners. A Wall Street Journal article notes that a University of California study found that lottery winners had higher happiness levels immediately after but then reverted to their pre-win ...

Most Liked Seat On a Plane Revealed
Most Liked Seat On a Plane Revealed
Most Liked Seat On a Plane Revealed - as part of the news and politics series by GeoBeats. Getting your ideal seat on a flight is almost like winning a lottery. And there's not a shortage of tips and tricks that people use to attain that slightest bit of extra effort. In a fascinating survey, Skyscanner asked participants to vote on their best seat preference. And the answer is 6A - not a surprise that it's in the front of the plane - the engine noise is less and you can deplane quickly. What's interesting is that about 60% of the ones surveyed mentioned that they prefer a window seat vs. 40% who picked an aisle seat. Well even if you don't get the coveted 6A seat, let's be grateful that atleast we don't have to stand during our flight which Ryan Air had planned but the proposal was rejected by the regulatory agency as reported by the Guardian. On the other end of the spectrum, Air New Zealand has come up with a creative seating option so you can lie flat in the economy class as noted by USA Today. Ofcourse, if you are lucky enough to fly first class, this is nothing new but for economy class flyers this is a major enhancement. Getting back to the skyscanner survey, you'd expect that no one would prefer a middle seat, however, 1% of participants did pick that middle seat.

Act of Kindness Turns a Filipino into a Multi-millionaire
Act of Kindness Turns a Filipino into a Multi-millionaire
For more news & videos visit ☛english.ntdtv.com One lucky man won the biggest cash prize in Philippines history. A Filipino migrant, who was on vacation in Manila, allowed a woman to cut in line while a lottery... a move that turned him into an instant millionaire. An act of kindness turned one man into a multi-millionaire in the Philippines. The man was about to place a bet at a lottery outlet in the southern Philippines when a woman suddenly cut in front of him and placed her bet first. The way the game works is that a computer picks six random numbers, and if they make a special combination, you win. [Margarita Juico, Chairman, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office] "He just stepped back and he let her go ahead. And then he said 'you know when I won, I thought of her and I thought that maybe if she had been patient enough to wait, then she could probably have won this prize instead of me." And that act of kindness made him $17 million richer... the biggest lottery cash prize in the Philippines' history. And not a single person won the lottery since last May. The man worked as a building estimator in New York and was back for a vacation in the Philippines. [Margarita Juico, Chairman, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office]: "There's a lot of poor people around and sometimes they place their hopes on this, maybe as a way of getting them over the hump. And so they place their bets with the hope that they will win and better their lives." As a security measure, the lottery ...
